Capodichino is located in the northern part of Naples , near the ring road that connects the airport to the highways to Rome and Salerno. You can therefore head towards the coast or Rome without passing through the city center.
Traffic around the airport and on the ring road is often heavy, especially in the late afternoon on weekdays. If you land during those hours, allow for longer travel times to any destination.
With normal traffic, Pompeii is about half an hour from the airport, Sorrento about an hour and a quarter, and Positano and Amalfi about an hour and a half.
To the north, the Royal Palace of Caserta, with its large park, is about half an hour away. To the south, beyond Salerno, the Greek temples of Paestum are about an hour and a half away, opening the way to Cilento, a less crowded coastline than the Amalfi Coast.
In July and August, the roads to the Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast are very busy, especially in the middle of the day and on weekends. If you have the choice, a morning flight will allow you to arrive at your hotel before the heaviest traffic.
With an evening arrival, the final stretch along the coast, narrow and winding, is traveled in the dark after a day of travel. In this case, it might be best to spend the first night in Naples, with the car delivered to your hotel the next morning, and departing for the coast in daylight.
On the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Peninsula, the most practical car is a small one, but after an international flight, suitcases can barely fit in a city car.
