Why rent a luxury car in Biarritz?

Biarritz is the capital of surfing and elegance on the Atlantic, with its Grande Plage, the Art Deco Casino, and an atmosphere that blends sport and sophistication. It's the perfect base for exploring the French Basque Country in a luxury car. Milan Luxury Cars delivers and collects your car directly in Biarritz, at your hotel, or at the airport—wherever you prefer in Europe.

Biarritz and the Basque Country by car: a practical guide between the ocean and the Pyrenees

Delivery between Biarritz, Anglet and the hinterland

Pick up your car in front of your hotel, in a villa between Biarritz and Anglet, in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, or in a house in the Basque hinterland. If access to the property is narrow or uphill, please let us know in advance.

The return can take place elsewhere, for example in Bordeaux or a Spanish city, if your journey continues.

Getting there: Biarritz Airport and Bilbao Airport

Biarritz Pays Basque Airport is located in Anglet, just minutes from the city center. Send us your flight number and landing time: delivery will take place at arrivals or at an agreed-upon location.

Those arriving from further away can also land in Bilbao, Spain, about an hour and a half to two hours away by car: you can find practical information on the Bilbao airport page.

The center: Rocher de la Vierge, the fishing port and the Côte des Basques

The town center is easy to explore on foot, and in summer, parking near the sea is limited: leave your car at the hotel. The Rocher de la Vierge is a rock connected to the mainland by a metal walkway, from which you can watch the waves crash beneath your feet. Not far away is the small fishing port, with colorful houses and seafood restaurants.

On the seafront, the Hôtel du Palais stands out, originally built as a summer residence by Napoleon III for Empress Eugénie. South of the center, beneath the cliffs, the Côte des Basques beach is a favorite with surfers: at high tide, the beach shrinks dramatically, so check the tide times before heading out.

Bayonne, a quarter of an hour away

Bayonne lies where the Nive flows into the Adour. Tall houses with colorful shutters overlook the docks, and the Basque Museum is located in the Petit Bayonne neighborhood. Many downtown streets are pedestrianized: park near the rivers and continue on foot.

The city is known for its ham and a long tradition of chocolate making, with historic shops lining the downtown streets. In summer, the Fêtes de Bayonne fill the streets with people dressed in red and white: on those days, it's easiest to leave your car in a parking lot outside the center and walk there.

Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the Basque Corniche

About twenty minutes south, Saint-Jean-de-Luz has a fishing port and a bay enclosed by breakwaters. In the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Louis XIV married Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain in 1660. Across the harbor is Ciboure, the birthplace of composer Maurice Ravel.

Between Ciboure and Hendaye runs the Basque Corniche, a road overlooking the ocean along layered rock cliffs. Drive it on a clear day, perhaps around sunset, stopping at the scenic lay-bys.

The hinterland: Espelette, Ainhoa and La Rhune

In about half an hour, you enter green hills and villages with white houses and red beams. Espelette is the home of chili peppers: in late summer and autumn, the facades are usually covered with long rows of dried chili peppers. In Ainhoa and Sare, near the border, there's always a fronton for Basque pelota, the region's traditional game.

From Col de Saint-Ignace, near Sare, a cogwheel train climbs to the top of La Rhune, the mountain on the Spanish border, usually from spring to autumn. From the summit, the view encompasses the Basque coast and the peaks of the Pyrenees. On these narrow, uphill roads, the Range Rover Sport handles better than a very low car.

San Sebastián and the Spanish coast

The Spanish border is about half an hour away. Both countries are in the Schengen area, but you'll still need to bring your passport or identity card and vehicle documents. Just across the Bidasoa River, Hondarribia has a walled historic center.

San Sebastián, known in Basque as Donostia, can be reached in about 45 minutes to an hour. La Concha beach forms an almost enclosed bay, while in the Parte Vieja, bars serve pintxos, small snacks enjoyed at the bar as you move from one establishment to the next.

Which car and when to come

The Atlantic climate is mild but changeable, and a sunny morning can end in rain. On the Corniche, the Porsche 911 (992) 4S Cabriolet is pleasant and comfortable on long journeys; if a shower comes, simply close the roof. For a family with suitcases and beach bags, there's the 7-seater Defender 110; other alternatives are among our SUVs.

In the height of summer, the coastal roads fill with traffic. June and September have long days and quieter beaches. Bordeaux is about two hours north, and the two cities combine well in a single trip. Some cities in France have low-emission zones: when you book, let us know where you'll be driving.
