Why rent a luxury car in Bologna?

Bologna, the Learned, is the beating heart of Emilia-Romagna and the ideal gateway for those who want to experience Italy's region of speed and flavor by car. From the UNESCO-listed porticoes to the medieval towers, the historic center is best explored on foot, but it's the surrounding countryside that reveals the true potential of a luxury car: from Bologna to Modena and Maranello, among the Ferrari and Lamborghini museums, it's less than 40 minutes by car, and the Via Emilia lends itself to a food and wine itinerary among wineries, Parmigiano Reggiano dairies, and traditional vinegar producers.

Bologna by luxury car: tips for exploring the city center, hills, and Apennines

Station, airport or hotel

Bologna is one of Italy's main high-speed rail hubs: from Milan, you can get there by train in just over an hour, and from Florence in less than forty minutes. If you're traveling this way, we can meet you at the central station with the car waiting for you, or we can bring it to your hotel when you really need it, such as the morning of your first trip.

Guglielmo Marconi Airport is located northwest of the city, about 20 minutes from the center. Let us know your flight number and landing time: we'll deliver your car to you at the arrivals hall or at the agreed-upon location. We also reach villas in the hills and farms in the plains.

Inside the ring boulevards, better on foot

The historic center is surrounded by a ring of avenues that follows the ancient walls and is a limited traffic zone. If your hotel is located within the city walls, please let them know of our arrival: they will know where to drop off your car and where to leave it on the days you spend in the city.

Between Piazza Maggiore and the Two Towers lies the Quadrilatero, a maze of narrow streets lined with shops selling cured meats, cheeses, and fresh pasta. This is the part of Bologna best explored before dinner, while your car stays in the garage.

San Luca and the Bolognese hills

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca stands on Colle della Guardia, southwest of the town center. It can be reached on foot along a nearly four-kilometer-long portico; by car, a winding road climbs up to the square, offering sweeping views of the plain and the foothills of the Apennines.

Beyond San Luca, the Bolognese hills begin, lined with villas, trattorias, and vineyards producing Pignoletto, the local white wine. The roads are narrow and winding: take your time in the late afternoon, when the summer air in the hills is cooler than in the city.

The old Futa road

To get to Florence, the highway crosses the Apennines in just over an hour. If you're not in a hurry, the old Futa state road climbs through woods and mountain passes with a long sequence of curves: this stretch is linked to the history of the Mille Miglia, the race that once ran from Brescia to Rome and back.

It takes about twice as long as the highway. Traffic is light on weekdays, but on Sundays you'll encounter many motorcyclists: drive carefully, especially on curves with poor visibility.

Day trips in Emilia-Romagna

Ferrara, about 45 minutes north, boasts a Renaissance city center that's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Estense Castle surrounded by a moat and a city wall that can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Ravenna, about an hour away, preserves Byzantine mosaics in its basilicas, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Heading towards Imola, about half an hour away, Dozza is a small village with painted house facades and a fortress that houses the regional enoteca (wine library). Parma is about an hour away by highway, and the Riviera Romagnola with Rimini and Riccione is about an hour and a half away. For car museums, you can find a one-day itinerary on the Modena and Maranello page.

Fairs and seasons

Bologna has a large exhibition center, hosting international events like Cosmoprof. During trade fair weeks, hotels fill up quickly: if you're traveling for work, book your car in advance. If you're traveling with colleagues or clients, a Mercedes-Benz V-Class van will transport the entire group from the hotel to the pavilions and dinners in a single vehicle.

July and August are warm and quiet, the perfect time to seek cool air in the hills and Apennines. During the cold months, fog is common in the plains, and cars are always equipped with winter tires.

Which car to choose

Sant'Agata Bolognese, where Lamborghini is headquartered, is about half an hour from the city: the Lamborghini Urus is the choice for those who want to visit the museum in a Lamborghini car without giving up a proper trunk. For the curves of the Futa and the hills, a compact sports car like the Porsche 911 (992) S Coupé or the BMW M2, among our sports cars , is more suitable.

If you alternate between appointments in the city and dinners in the hills, an elegant and discreet SUV like the BMW X7 40d or the Audi Q8 is the most convenient solution. At the end of your stay, you can leave the car in another city, for example in Florence or Milan.
