Bordeaux and the vineyards by car: how to organize the trip

Delivery in town or at your château

We'll deliver your car to your hotel in the center of Bordeaux, to the château among the vineyards where you're staying, to a private address, or to the airport. Many estates have long gravel driveways and gates with specific opening times: let us know who to contact upon arrival and we'll arrange delivery accordingly.

The journey can also end elsewhere, for example in Paris , Biarritz or Spain: we will pick up the car there.

Mérignac airport and Saint-Jean station

Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport is located west of the city, about half an hour from the city center, depending on traffic. Please let us know your flight and arrival time: delivery will take place in arrivals or at a jointly agreed upon location.

The high-speed train connects Paris to the Gare Saint-Jean in about two hours. If you're traveling this way, we can have your car waiting for you at your hotel, leaving you free on your first day to explore the city on foot.

The centre: Place de la Bourse, the Chartrons and the Cité du Vin

The center of Bordeaux is crisscrossed by trams and has many pedestrian streets, while the Garonne quays have become a long promenade. It's best to get around on foot and leave your car in the hotel parking lot. Facing the Place de la Bourse, the Miroir d'eau is a large slab covered by a thin film of water that reflects the 18th-century facades and, at intervals, turns into mist.

Further north, along the river, the Chartrons district, once home to wine merchants, is now filled with antique shops and small restaurants. Continuing, you'll reach the Cité du Vin, a curved museum on the banks of the Garonne that showcases wine in world cultures and offers a panoramic view of the city from its top floor.

The Left Bank: The Médoc and the Châteaux Road

North of the city, on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, the Médoc region encompasses famous names such as Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, and Saint-Estèphe. The road connecting them passes châteaux with a wide variety of architecture, from classical residences to contemporary buildings. Margaux is about 40 minutes from the city center, while Pauillac is about an hour away.

Château tours are usually organized by reservation, and some estates are not open to the public. Book a few weeks in advance, especially in spring and during the grape harvest. Closer to the city, to the south, the Pessac-Léognan estates are about 20 minutes away.

The right bank: Saint-Émilion and Pomerol

Saint-Émilion, about 45 minutes east, is a medieval village of pale stone surrounded by vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the surrounding landscape. Its monolithic church is carved into the rock and can be visited with a guide. The streets of the center are steep and cobbled: park outside the village and walk up.

A few minutes away is Pomerol, a small appellation made up almost entirely of vineyards. Merlot dominates on the right bank, while Cabernet Sauvignon dominates in the Médoc: tasting both on the same trip helps you understand the differences between the two banks.

Group tastings

A day at the wineries means multiple tastings in just a few hours. The Mercedes-Benz V-Class van , which has room for a group or a family with lots of luggage, will take everyone from one estate to the next: decide in advance who will drive and skip the tastings. For the rest of your stay, you can drive one of the fleet's cars.

Arcachon and the Dune du Pilat

About an hour west, you'll reach the Arcachon Bay, a large lagoon on the Atlantic known for its oysters, which can be sampled at the producers' huts along the shore. In Arcachon, the Ville d'Hiver preserves 19th-century villas built for health-cure stays.

A little further south, the Dune du Pilat is the highest sand dune in Europe. In the summer, you can climb a staircase to the top, and from the top you can see the ocean, the pine forest, and the lagoon. Opposite, the Cap Ferret peninsula can be reached by boat from Arcachon or by car, circling the lagoon, a much longer route.

Which car, when and where to go

As a couple, along the Médoc road, a Porsche 911 (992) S Coupé combines driving pleasure and discretion in front of the châteaux. With the family and suitcases, an SUV like the BMW X7 40d is more comfortable: find alternatives among our SUVs.

The grape harvest takes place between September and October, when the estates are in full swing. Spring is quiet and perfect for driving through the vineyards. From Bordeaux, you can drive down to Biarritz , about two hours away, and return your car there. If your itinerary includes other French cities, please let us know when booking: some have low-emission zones.

FAQ
