Cannes: What to Know to Plan Your Stay

Hotel, villa or port: where you receive the car

We'll drop you off at your hotel on the Croisette, at your villa on the city hills, or at the Vieux-Port, next to the Palais des Festivals, if you're arriving by boat. We just need the address and time.

The return can take place elsewhere, for example at the airport before your flight, in another coastal town, or in Italy. If you're looking for a Ferrari, read our tips on renting a Ferrari in Cannes.

Arriving by plane: Nice and Cannes-Mandelieu

Most scheduled flights land at Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, about 30-45 minutes from Cannes, depending on traffic. Your car can be waiting for you right at the terminal, so you can leave as soon as you've collected your luggage.

If you're traveling by private jet, you can land at Cannes-Mandelieu Airport, a business airport located about a quarter of an hour from the city center. We can also meet you there upon arrival.

La Croisette and the Palais des Festivals

La Croisette is Cannes's seafront promenade: on one side, the grand hotels and boutiques, on the other, private beaches with loungers and restaurants. It's easy to walk along, especially in the evening.

At the western end is the Palais des Festivals, with the steps that welcome the Festival's red carpet every May. During other months, you can climb the steps and take a photo, while on the sidewalk surrounding the Palais, you'll find the handprints of actors and directors.

The Suquet and the Forville market

Le Suquet is the oldest neighborhood in Cannes and occupies the hill behind the Vieux-Port. It's best explored on foot, as the streets ascend in steps and are not suitable for cars. A short climb takes you to the church and medieval tower, from which you can enjoy a sweeping view of the entire bay and its islands.

At the foot of the hill is the Forville covered market, where you can buy fruit, vegetables, fish, and flowers in the morning. Stop by before the heat hits, then have lunch at the neighborhood restaurants.

The Lérins Islands

Off Cannes are the Lérins Islands, accessible by boats departing from the old port. The crossing is short, and there are no cars on the islands: leave your car in a parking lot downtown.

Sainte-Marguerite, the largest, is covered in pine trees and home to the Royal Fort, where the prisoner known as the Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned in the late 17th century. Saint-Honorat is smaller and quieter: a community of monks lives there, cultivating vines and producing wine. Visiting one island alone takes half a day; visiting both will require a full day.

Mougins, Grasse and the hills

About a quarter of an hour from the coast, Mougins is a small hilltop village with houses arranged in a circle around the summit, art galleries, and many restaurants. Picasso spent the last years of his life here.

Continuing inland, in about half an hour you'll reach Grasse, the city of perfume. Some historic perfumeries open their workshops to visitors and offer short courses where you can create a personal fragrance to take home.

The Esterel and trips along the coast

To the west, beyond Mandelieu-la-Napoule, the Esterel Massif begins. The coastal road known as the Corniche d'Or runs between red rocks and coves to Saint-Raphaël, with numerous panoramic views.

To the east, Antibes is about 20 minutes away and Nice about 40 minutes. The Principality of Monaco can be reached in about an hour on the highway, while Saint-Tropez is about an hour and a half away, more on summer days.

When to book: the Festival and the summer

Every year in May, for about twelve days, the Festival fills the city with guests, press, and film professionals. The streets around the Palais are closed at times, making parking difficult. If you're coming during that period, please ask us for a quote well in advance.

For gala evenings, it's best to arrive on foot or by taxi, as parking around the Palais is difficult. In the height of summer, the beaches are very crowded, while in June and September, the sea is still warm and traffic is lighter.
