Cologne Central Station is right next to the Cathedral: if you arrive by train, we can deliver your car to a nearby location we can agree on. Alternatively, the car will be waiting for you at your hotel, your office address, or at Cologne/Bonn Airport, southeast of the city. If you're arriving by plane, please let us know your flight number and landing time.
The Cologne Trade Fair (Koelnmesse) is located in the Deutz district, on the right bank of the Rhine, opposite the Cathedral. During major events, finding a room is difficult, and the roads to the pavilions become congested: book in advance and choose whether to have your car picked up at the hotel or at the trade fair.
Inside the cathedral, in addition to the stained-glass windows, the reliquary of the Three Kings, a large golden casket behind the high altar, is worth a visit. Those with strong legs can climb the south tower on foot for a bird's-eye view of the city and the Rhine.
The main museums are concentrated around the cathedral. The Ludwig Museum, next to the cathedral, is dedicated to 20th-century and contemporary art, with a rich collection of Pop Art and works by Picasso. The Wallraf-Richartz Museum exhibits European painting from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. On the Rhine, the Chocolate Museum is a favourite with children. Everything is within walking distance: leave your car in the hotel garage.
The Rheinauhafen, an old river port transformed into an office and residential district, is recognizable by the three Kranhäuser, crane-shaped buildings overlooking the water. The riverside promenade connects the port to the old town, past traditional breweries serving Kölsch, the local beer, served in thin glasses.
For a classic view of the cathedral, walk across the Hohenzollern Bridge, covered in padlocks left by couples, and reach the Deutz riverbank. If your evening includes a few drinks, leave your car at the hotel and get around on foot or by taxi.
Bonn is about a half-hour drive south. It was the capital of West Germany and Beethoven was born here: his birthplace is now a museum. Between Cologne and Bonn, in Brühl, the Augustusburg and Falkenlust castles, baroque residences with gardens, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Just beyond Bonn, in Königswinter, the Drachenfels is a hill overlooking the Rhine with castle ruins and a sweeping view of the valley. You can climb it on foot or by historic cogwheel railway; halfway up, you can visit Drachenburg Castle, built in the 19th century. The road along the riverbank is quiet and suitable for a discovery tour like the Porsche 911 (992) 4S Cabriolet.
Koblenz is about an hour away by highway. At the Deutsches Eck, the point of land where the Moselle flows into the Rhine, you can see the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress on the other bank, overlooking the confluence.
Heading up the Moselle, the road follows the river's meanders through steep vineyards and villages with half-timbered houses. Cochem, with its hilltop castle, is about an hour and a half from Cologne. In the woods near the river lies the much-photographed Eltz Castle. From the parking lot, you can continue on foot or by shuttle.
For this day, a comfortable and spacious car like the Audi RS6 or Porsche Cayenne S Coupé is best. If you plan to do tastings at the wineries, decide in advance who will drive and who will forgo the tastings.
About an hour from Cologne, nestled in the wooded hills of the Eifel, lies the Nürburgring, a circuit linked to the history of motor racing since the 1920s. You can visit the public areas, watch a scheduled race, or enjoy the surrounding scenery.
The Eifel is also a land of ancient volcanic lakes, including the small Maares. The largest is Lake Laacher See, with the Benedictine Abbey of Maria Laach on its shore. The roads are narrow, with curves, climbs, and villages to traverse, and on weekends they are frequented by motorcyclists: drive carefully and obey the posted speed limits.
Aachen, about an hour west, boasts Charlemagne's cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and borders Belgium and the Netherlands. Düsseldorf is about forty minutes north, and Frankfurt is about two hours southeast. You can return your car in one of these cities or in another European country.
In the Rhine region, some cities have low-emission zones: when you book, please tell us which cities you plan to drive in. Along the motorways, sections without a general speed limit alternate with posted speed limits and frequent roadworks. For driving regulations, you can find more information on the Germany page.
