The Costa del Sol from Nerja to Sotogrande: base, roads and cars

One coast, many characters

The Costa del Sol follows the coastline of the province of Malaga, from Nerja in the east to Estepona and Manilva in the west. Sotogrande, already in the province of Cadiz, is often considered its natural continuation. It takes about two hours to drive from one end to the other, and each stretch has its own unique character.

East of Malaga lies the Axarquía, with a higher, rockier coastline and quieter villages. In the center, between Torremolinos and Fuengirola, the towns are denser and more family-friendly. To the west, Marbella, Puerto Banús, and Estepona are home to villas, luxury hotels, and golf courses, all the way to the residential areas and marina of Sotogrande.

Which base to choose

If you're looking for nightlife, restaurants, and seaside evenings, the natural choice is Marbella or Puerto Banús , which also has the advantage of keeping your car and yacht in the same place if you arrive by sea.

For a family holiday, with wide beaches and year-round services, Fuengirola and Benalmádena are convenient and close to the airport. Malaga is the perfect base if you're interested in city museums and restaurants and want to take day trips to Granada. Sotogrande, a more secluded spot, is popular with golfers and polo enthusiasts; Nerja is for those who prefer a slower pace and clifftop scenery.

Two roads along the coast

Along the western stretch, two parallel roads run. The A-7, a toll-free highway, follows the coast and passes through towns with many exits: in summer, during rush hour, it is often busy. The AP-7 is a toll highway further inland, generally smoother, and useful for long trips to Estepona and Sotogrande.

East of Malaga, the road to Nerja runs between hills and the sea, with open views of the coast. On this side, an open-top car like the Ferrari Roma Spider or Porsche 718 Boxster is suitable for a leisurely journey. Spain has cities with low-emission zones: please indicate the locations you plan to visit when requesting a low-emission zone.

Golf all year round

The Costa del Sol is also known as the Costa del Golf for the large number of courses between Malaga and Sotogrande, many of which are open year-round. In Sotogrande, you'll find Valderrama, known for hosting the Ryder Cup; other courses are scattered around Mijas, Estepona, and Casares, often with sea views.

For a single golfer or a couple, an SUV like the Range Rover Sport or Audi Q8 can easily carry the bags. For a group of golfers, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class van has room for a group or family with lots of luggage and can transport everyone together from one course to the next.

The hinterland of the pueblos blancos

Behind the coast, just minutes from the sea, begin the hills of the pueblos blancos, Andalusia's white villages. Mijas above Fuengirola, Ojén above Marbella, Casares near Estepona, and Frigiliana near Nerja are less than half an hour from the coast and can be explored on foot.

Further inland, beyond Ronda, the road continues towards the province of Cadiz and the Sierra de Grazalema, with towns like Grazalema and Zahara de la Sierra. It's a full-day trip, with plenty of twists and turns: an SUV like the Porsche Cayenne S Coupé or a sports car like the Ferrari F8 Tributo are the best choices.

Seasons on the coast

Winters are mild and often sunny: many visitors from Northern Europe spend the cold months here, and golf and seaside strolls continue uninterrupted. Spring brings flowers to the white villages and ideal temperatures for driving open-top.

Midsummer is the busiest time of year, and inland the midday hours are very hot. September and October still offer beach days with clearer roads. In winter, the Sierra Nevada behind Granada is covered in snow, and our cars always have winter tires.

Arrivals, departures and delivery

The main arrival point is Malaga Airport , almost in the center of the coast: Marbella is about 45 minutes west, and Nerja about an hour east. We'll deliver your car to you upon arrival, at your hotel, villa, or port.

You can also drop off your car elsewhere: at another point on the coast or in another city, like Seville or Granada. So, for example, you can spend a few days in Nerja and end your trip in Sotogrande without having to turn back.
