Unlike many seaside resorts, Fuengirola doesn't empty out in winter. Many residents, both Spanish and foreign, live there year-round, and shops, restaurants, and services remain open even off-season. This is a real advantage for a longer stay.
We'll deliver your car to your seafront hotel, rental apartment, or villa in the hills, at the address and time you specify. If you're staying in a residential complex with a concierge or gate, please provide us with access directions in advance.
Location is the main reason to choose Fuengirola. Malaga airport is about twenty minutes away, and Malaga and Marbella city centers are about half an hour each. In a week, you can alternate museums, beaches, and evenings on the coast without changing hotels. In the evening, you can dine in Marbella and return to a quieter, more residential city in about half an hour.
This central location also makes it easy to finish your trip: you can return your car to the airport on the day of departure, or in another Spanish city if you continue your journey by land.
Fuengirola's seafront promenade runs for several kilometers along almost the entire city, lined with well-equipped beaches, beach bars, and cafés. It's the perfect place for an evening stroll and, in the summer, a seafood dinner overlooking the sea. The marina, near the center, hosts pleasure boats and has restaurants and bars along the docks.
At the western end, near the river mouth, Sohail Castle dominates the beach from atop a hill. Its walls, of Arab origin, have been restored and are used in the summer as a backdrop for concerts and events.
About a quarter of an hour's climb uphill, Mijas Pueblo is a whitewashed village overlooking the coast, with sloping alleys, flower-filled balconies, and a small chapel carved into the rock, the Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña. From the lookout next to the chapel, you can see all the way to the sea at Fuengirola.
The center can be explored on foot: leave your car in one of the town's parking lots. Donkey taxis, known as burro taxis, have been the symbol of Mijas for many years. The road up from Fuengirola has wide curves and continuous views: a convertible like the Porsche 911 (992) 4S Cabriolet is the natural choice for a sunset drive.
Benalmádena is about a quarter of an hour away on the way to Malaga. Its marina, Puerto Marina, boasts original architecture, with white buildings overlooking the docks, restaurants, and shops. A cable car runs from Benalmádena up Mount Calamorro, offering views of the entire coast.
Benalmádena Pueblo, the old town on the hills, is quieter and retains its whitewashed streets and small squares. Continuing east, you reach Torremolinos, one of the first tourist resorts on the coast, with long beaches and the fishing district of La Carihuela, known for its fried fish.
Fuengirola is a popular choice for families: wide, well-equipped beaches, a flat seafront promenade suitable for strollers, and the Bioparc, the zoo in the city center.
For traveling with kids and luggage, the 7-seater Land Rover Defender 110 or the Audi Q7 are comfortable even for short everyday trips. For a larger group, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class van has room for a group or family with lots of luggage.
Parking spaces are tight in downtown streets, and many apartments have shared garages with small parking spaces. Before choosing a large SUV, check the size of the parking space. A city car like the Smart Fortwo or Mini GP3 can be used alongside your main car for city travel.
From Fuengirola, Ronda is about an hour and a half away, Granada about two hours, and Seville about two and a half hours—all suitable destinations for a full day. For golf, the courses in the Mijas area are just minutes away, while Puerto Banús is about forty minutes away.
Thanks to the mild climate, you can drive with the top down even in winter, during the middle of the day, and during those months the road to Mijas and the hills is free of summer traffic. July and August are the busiest weeks: book your car in advance, especially if you need a vehicle for seven people. Traffic on the coast is lighter in spring and autumn.
