Luxury car rental in Gstaad: discretion, snow, and mountain roads

How to get there

Gstaad lies at 1050 meters in the Bernese Oberland . It's about two hours from Geneva , two and a half from Zurich , and an hour and a half from Bern . The two access routes are the Col du Pillon from Aigle and the Saanenmöser from Spiez: both offer panoramic views, and both require suitable tires in the cold season.

A place that thrives on privacy

Gstaad is the Alpine resort where you go to avoid being noticed, and this aspect also changes rentals: here, a discreet and impeccable vehicle works better than a flashy one. A dark luxury SUV with all-wheel drive and tinted rear windows is the most common choice, followed by a luxury van , especially for those arriving in groups or with staff.

When the village is full

The period between Christmas and Epiphany is the absolute peak, followed by the February holidays . In the summer, the tournaments and festivals of July and August once again fill the valley and hotels. During both periods, cars get booked up quickly.

From Gstaad

Montreux and Lake Geneva are an hour away, Interlaken an hour and a quarter, Zermatt two and a half hours (leaving your car in Täsch), and St. Moritz four hours away. We also deliver and collect from your destination if you prefer not to retrace your steps.

Before leaving

Switzerland is not a member of the European Union : you need a passport or other identification document in addition to your driving license, and the annual motorway vignette, which is electronic and can be purchased online by entering your license plate. In winter, we only deliver vehicles with winter tires. Requirements for non-EU customers are listed in the guide to documents, deposits, and insurance.

The pedestrian center and where to leave your car

The heart of Gstaad, the Promenade with its boutiques, is a pedestrian zone: by car, you can reach the hotels and parking lots on the outskirts of the center, then continue on foot. This is one of the reasons why delivery directly to your hotel or chalet works best here: the car is already waiting for you where you need it, without having to look for parking.

The Saanenland, not just Gstaad

Many chalets aren't in Gstaad proper, but in the valley's villages: Saanen, Schönried, Saanenmöser, Rougemont, Lauenen, and Gsteig. The distances are short, but the roads leading up to the more isolated chalets can be steep and snowy, which is why all-wheel drive is almost always the best choice in the Saanenland. When requesting a quote, please specify the chalet's address, not just "Gstaad": the delivery time and sometimes even the vehicle we offer will vary.

Arriving by plane

Saanen's small airport, just minutes from the city center, accommodates helicopters and light private planes, but not larger jets. Jet travelers typically land in Geneva, Bern, or Sion and continue by car or helicopter. The car can be waiting for you at your arrival airport or directly in Gstaad.

A day out, at high altitude

From the summit of Col du Pillon, on the road to Aigle, the Glacier 3000 cable car departs, ascending through the Diablerets glaciers. This is the most classic half-day trip from Gstaad, and the pass is a half-hour drive away. On fresh snow days, it's a good idea to check the road conditions first, as it climbs via a series of hairpin bends.

Two roads from Geneva

From Geneva, you can reach Gstaad in about two hours, via two different routes. The first follows the lake to Montreux and climbs to Aigle and the Col du Pillon. This is the most scenic route, but in winter, it also has the most curves and is more likely to encounter snow on the road. The second route passes through Bulle and Château-d'Oex, along the Sarine Valley. This is smoother and is best in the evening or when it snows heavily.

Gstaad in summer

Between July and August, the valley changes audiences: the tennis tournament, the polo days, and the classical music festival fill hotels and chalets, and the surrounding passes, from Pillon to Jaunpass to Col des Mosses, become roads to explore for the sheer pleasure of driving. It's the season when a convertible or supercar really makes sense, and when availability runs out almost as fast as at Christmas.

FAQ

Do you need an SUV? Not by law, but in winter, all-wheel drive is the sensible choice for the Saanenland chalets. For those arriving in a group or with staff, a luxury van is a good option.

Can Gstaad be combined with other resorts? Yes: Verbier and Crans-Montana are about two hours away, and Zermatt is two and a half hours away. The car stays the same for the entire trip, and we can pick it up at the destination.

When should you book for the holidays? Fall is the best time to do so: between Christmas and New Year's, cars in the valley get booked up quickly.
