Lausanne, Lavaux, and the Lake Geneva Riviera: A Guide to Traveling by Car

Where we deliver the car to you

Many Lausanne hotels are located in Ouchy, the lakeside neighborhood with its harbor and tree-lined promenade, or in the upper part, near the train station. We can deliver your car to your hotel, the train station, a private address, or a villa in the hills surrounding the city.

The city center has limited access due to traffic, and the streets of the upper town are steep and full of one-way streets. Hotel delivery saves you the hassle of finding parking. For days in the city, the metro connects Ouchy to the station and the city center, so your car can stay in the garage until your first outing.

Getting there from Geneva Airport

The closest international airport is Geneva , about fifty minutes away by highway. The car can be delivered to you in arrivals, if you provide us with your flight number and arrival time, and returned to the same airport before departure.

The journey between Geneva and Lausanne is on the motorway, so you'll need a Swiss vignette: it's valid for an annual period, can be purchased online, and is linked to the license plate number found on your car's documents. If you're traveling through France, Évian, or Chamonix in the following days, bring your driver's license and a valid travel document, as Switzerland is not in the European Union.

The Lavaux: the road between terraced vineyards

Between Lausanne and Vevey, the Lavaux vineyards slope down to the lake on terraces supported by stone walls. The landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, can be explored along the Route de la Corniche, a scenic road halfway up the hill between Lutry and Chexbres, passing by winemaking villages like Epesses.

The roads between the vineyards are narrow, with low walls lining the road and a few tractors during the autumn harvest. A compact, open-top car like the Porsche 718 Boxster is the easiest to drive here. Many wineries offer tastings of Chasselas, the area's signature white grape: if you're in a group, you can all travel in the van together, but decide in advance who will drive and forgo the tastings.

Vevey, Montreux and Chillon Castle

Vevey is about twenty minutes from Lausanne. On the lakeside, in front of the Alimentarium, the museum dedicated to food, a large steel fork juts out of the water and is one of the most photographed spots on the Riviera. Charlie Chaplin lived for a long time in Corsier-sur-Vevey, above the city, and his villa now houses the Chaplin's World museum.

Montreux, a little further on, is known for the Montreux Jazz Festival, held annually in July, and for the statue of Freddie Mercury on the lakefront. Chillon Castle, built on a rocky island near the shore, is about a half-hour ride from Lausanne. From Montreux, a cogwheel train ascends to the Rochers-de-Naye, offering sweeping views of the lake and the Alps.

Trips to Gruyère and Vallée de Joux

In about fifty minutes, you reach Gruyères, the medieval village with its castle, in the region that gives its name to the famous cheese. At the foot of the village is a demonstration dairy, and in Broc, not far away, the Maison Cailler chocolate factory welcomes visitors. It's a perfect trip, even for those traveling with children.

To the northwest, in the Jura, the Vallée de Joux is about an hour away. It's a tranquil valley, with a lake and extensive forests, home to some of Switzerland's most renowned fine watchmaking factories. For watch lovers, it's a unique day out, on roads with little traffic.

From the lake to the mountain

Lausanne is also a good starting point for the Alps. Verbier can be reached in about an hour and a quarter , and Gstaad in about an hour and a half . From December to March, an SUV like the Maserati Grecale, Porsche Cayenne S Coupé, or Range Rover Sport makes the transition from the city to the snow easy: in winter, all our vehicles are equipped with winter tires.

In summer, for cruising along the lake shore with the top down, the Ferrari Roma Spider and the Porsche 911 (992) 4S Cabriolet are natural choices. Other convertibles and coupes are on the sports car page.

The seasons on Lake Geneva

In summer, Belle Époque paddle steamers connect Lausanne to the villages of the Riviera and to Évian on the French shore: a crossing is a good way to alternate a day of driving with a day of rest. In autumn, the grape harvest enlivens Lavaux, while in December, Montreux hosts a large Christmas market on the lakeside.

Return the car elsewhere

Your trip doesn't have to end in Lausanne. You can return your car at Geneva Airport before your flight, in Chamonix , France, or continue on to Italy via the Great St. Bernard Pass or the Simplon Pass and leave it in Milan or on Lake Maggiore.
