Driving in Paris: Tips for the city, airports, and excursions

Hotel delivery, from Place Vendôme to the Left Bank

We'll drop off your car right in front of your hotel on Place Vendôme, along Avenue Montaigne, or on the Left Bank in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. If your hotel has secure parking, your car will be kept safe on days you're walking around.

Returning your car doesn't have to take place in Paris: you can leave it at an airport, in another French city, or even in another country.

Charles de Gaulle, Orly and Le Bourget

Charles de Gaulle Airport, northeast of the city, is where most intercontinental flights land; the journey to the city center takes about 45 minutes to an hour, longer during peak hours. Orly Airport, to the south, is closer, about 30 minutes to 45 minutes away. At both airports, we'll deliver your car to you at arrivals.

If you're traveling by private jet, Le Bourget, the business aviation airport north of Paris, is about half an hour from the city center. We'll deliver your vehicle at your scheduled landing time, so you can depart without waiting.

Driving in Paris: Traffic, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Périphérique

Traffic in Paris is heavy for much of the day. Around the Arc de Triomphe, twelve avenues converge at a large roundabout without marked lanes, where right-of-way is given to those entering: if you feel unsafe, take an alternative route.

The Périphérique, the ring road that encircles the city, connects neighborhoods to the highways, but during rush hour it moves very slowly. Paris also has a low-emission zone: if you have any questions about this, please ask us when booking. Many underground parking garages have low heights, so check this if you're driving a tall SUV or the van.

Which car for Paris

For trips between hotels, restaurants, and boutiques, an SUV like the Porsche Cayenne S Coupé or the Range Rover is comfortable and discreet. For trips out of town, a supercar like the Ferrari F8 Tributo, or an open-top like the Porsche 911 (992) 4S Cabriolet, makes country roads enjoyable.

During fashion weeks, or for a large family, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class van , with space for a group or a family with lots of luggage, can carry everyone together; but between appointments, it's a good idea to know where to park.

Versailles and Giverny

The Palace of Versailles is about 40 minutes from the city center. Visiting the castle and the gardens will take at least half a day; remember that the palace is closed on Mondays.

Giverny is home to Claude Monet's house and garden, including the water lily pond that inspired many of his paintings. It's about an hour and a quarter from Paris, and the gardens are open from spring to fall.

Castles of the Loire and Champagne

The Loire castles are about two or three hours away. Chambord is famous for its grand double-helix staircase, and Chenonceau for its arches built over the Cher River. It's worth spending at least one night in the valley.

Champagne is about an hour and a half to two hours away. In Reims, the Gothic cathedral was the coronation site of the kings of France for centuries; in Épernay, the Avenue de Champagne is home to many historic houses. For winery tours by van, the group travels together: decide in advance who will drive and forgo the tastings.

Normandy and travels to the south

Deauville, on the Normandy coast, is about two and a half hours away. It's known for its wooden promenade along the beach, its racecourse, and its casino. Honfleur, with its old port, is a short distance away.

You can also cross France on a multi-day trip and leave your car in Nice , on the French Riviera. Tolls and driving regulations in the rest of the country are explained on the France page.

When to book

During fashion weeks, hotels in the city center are full, and it's a good idea to book your car in advance. In August, many Parisians leave the city, and traffic eases. In winter, trips to the countryside are still possible, as our cars always have winter tires fitted.
