Visitors to Provence often stay in a mas, a typical stone country house, or a bastide surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. We'll deliver your car to your home or to a hotel in Aix-en-Provence or Avignon. Many of these properties are reached by a dirt road: let us know in advance so we can choose the most suitable model together.
The main airport is Marseille, in Marignane, about half an hour southwest of Aix-en-Provence. Nice Airport is also convenient for the eastern part of the region. With your flight number and arrival time, we can arrange delivery to the arrivals hall or to your preferred location.
From Paris, the high-speed train reaches Avignon and Aix-en-Provence in about three hours. If you arrive this way, we can have your car waiting for you at the station exit when your train arrives.
Aix is an elegant city, with the Cours Mirabeau shaded by plane trees and a fountain in almost every square. The historic center is best explored on foot; it's best to have your car delivered to your hotel.
Paul Cézanne was born here and painted the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, which can be seen from the city, many times. His studio is located on the hill north of the center. To see the mountain up close, drive along the road that runs along it to the east, passing vineyards and small villages.
In Avignon, the Palais des Papes harks back to the 14th century, when the city was the seat of the papacy. The walls still enclose the historic center, and the famous Saint-Bénézet Bridge stops halfway across the Rhone. In July, the Avignon Festival brings theater and performances to the city: during those weeks, hotels and parking are in high demand.
About half an hour away, Châteauneuf-du-Pape gives its name to one of the most famous wines of the Rhone Valley. Many wineries offer tastings, often by reservation: for a day trip to the estates by van , travel together, but decide in advance who will drive and skip the tasting.
In the Luberon, Gordes stands on a hill and is recognizable from afar, with its houses perched around the castle. A few minutes away is the Cistercian Abbey of Sénanque, still inhabited by a community of monks, with lavender fields in front of its facade.
Roussillon is built on ancient ochre quarries: the houses display every shade of red and orange, and a path runs through the quarries. The streets in the villages are narrow and often pedestrianized: parking is on the edge of town, and from there you continue on foot.
At the foot of the Alpilles, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is home to the monastery of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, where Van Gogh was hospitalized and painted some of his most famous works. Just outside the village, you can visit the Roman ruins of Glanum. Les Baux-de-Provence, about a quarter of an hour away, occupies a rocky outcrop with the remains of a castle, and the old quarries at its foot host art projections on the stone walls.
Arles, about half an hour away, has a Roman amphitheater still used for performances and the historic center where Van Gogh lived and worked. South of Arles, the Rhone splits to form the Camargue, a plain of ponds, rice paddies, and salt marshes home to pink flamingos, white horses, and wild black bulls. The roads are flat and straight, reaching the sea at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Bring mosquito repellent in summer, especially in the evening.
Lavender usually blooms between late June and July; the largest fields are found on the Valensole plateau, about an hour from Aix. In the height of summer, the heat is intense and the villages fill with visitors: leave early in the morning and return before midday.
The Mistral, the cold wind that descends along the Rhone Valley, can blow strongly for a few days even on clear days: on those days, a coupé or SUV is more pleasant than an open-top. Some cities have low-emission zones: when booking, let us know which ones you plan to drive in.
As a couple, on the roads between olive groves and pale rocks of the Alpilles and Luberon, a Ferrari Roma Spider combines elegance and comfort, even on long journeys. If your mas has a dirt road or you're traveling with family, an SUV like the Audi Q8 or BMW X5 30d is more practical: the full range is on the SUV page . From Provence, you can head down to Marseille and the coast, or continue to Nice and return the car there.
