Salzburg by car: festivals, lakes, and cross-border trips

Hotel and airport delivery

In Salzburg's old town, traffic is limited and distances are short: the most convenient drop-off is at your hotel entrance. We can also deliver your car to a private address, a nearby villa, or the main train station.

Salzburg Airport is about fifteen minutes from the city center. Delivery to arrivals is possible: just let us know your flight number and estimated landing time. Many intercontinental flights arrive in Munich, about two hours away. We can also have your car waiting for you there, so you can head straight for Austria.

Vignette and border with Germany

The Austrian motorway network requires a vignette, which must be purchased before entering the motorway. A digital version is also available: if you purchase it online, check the date it is valid. Across the German border, however, cars do not need to pay a vignette.

Salzburg is just a few kilometers from the German border, and many trips pass through Bavaria. Austria and Germany are part of the Schengen Area, but always carry a valid ID and driver's license.

The Salzburg Festival

Every summer, between July and August, the Salzburg Festival brings opera, concerts, and theater to the city. The most traditional performance is "Jedermann," performed outdoors on Cathedral Square. The main venues, such as the Great Festival Hall and the Felsenreitschule, are adjacent to each other at the foot of the Mönchsberg.

During those weeks, the city center is very crowded, and the streets near the venues are packed with people. For gala evenings, it's best to leave your car in the garage and reach the show on foot or by taxi, avoiding driving in evening dress. If you're planning on coming for the Festival, book your car well in advance.

The lakes of the Salzkammergut

To the east of the city, the Salzkammergut begins, a region of lakes and mountains. Lake Fuschlsee is about twenty minutes away, and St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang is about half an hour away. From St. Wolfgang, on the other shore, a cogwheel train ascends the Schafberg in the summer, offering views of many of the region's lakes. In Mondsee, also about half an hour away, is the basilica where the wedding scene from "The Sound of Music" was filmed.

Hallstatt, overlooking its lake and a UNESCO World Heritage site, can be reached in about an hour and a quarter. The village is small and very popular: leave your car in the parking lot at the entrance and continue on foot, best early in the morning. Along the way, Bad Ischl boasts Emperor Franz Joseph's summer residence.

Berchtesgaden and the Eagle's Nest

Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, is about a half-hour drive south of Salzburg. Above the village, on Mount Kehlstein, is the Kehlsteinhaus, known as the Eagle's Nest. Built in the 1930s, it is now a restaurant overlooking the Alps. The road up to the top is closed to private cars: park at the Obersalzberg, continue by dedicated buses, and finally take an elevator inside the mountain. The Kehlsteinhaus is open only in the summer.

At Obersalzberg, a documentation center tells the story of the area during Nazi rule. Just minutes from Berchtesgaden, the Königssee can be visited by electric boats that take you to the church of St. Bartholomew on the lake shore.

Which car to choose

For the lakes of the Salzkammergut, in summer, an open-top car like the Ferrari F8 Spider or the Porsche 911 (992) 4S Cabriolet makes even the back roads enjoyable. For long autobahn trips to Vienna or Munich, an Audi RS6 combines comfort and luggage space; you can find all the alternatives on the sports car page.

In winter, for the ski resorts in the region and towards Kitzbühel, an SUV like the Mercedes-AMG G63 or Range Rover is the best option. During the cold season, every vehicle we deliver comes with winter tires.

Salzburg in different seasons

Summer is dominated by the festival and trips to the lakes. In autumn, the streets of the Salzkammergut empty and the woods change color. In December, Advent markets fill the squares around the cathedral, and in winter, the city is a convenient stop before or after a week in the snow.

Continue the journey

Salzburg is a good gateway between several countries. Munich and Kitzbühel are both about an hour and a half away, and Innsbruck is about two hours away: the quickest route to Innsbruck passes through Germany. Vienna is about three hours to the east.

You can return your vehicle in any of these cities, or you can continue towards Italy via the Brenner Pass or the Tauern Autobahn, which has a separate toll section.
