Cars reach the edge of the city via the Ponte della Libertà, which connects Venice to the mainland. The terminus is Piazzale Roma, with its multi-story parking garage; a little further on is Tronchetto Island, with another large parking garage. From here on, the only ways to get around are on foot, by vaporetto, or by water taxi.
Therefore, if you're staying in the historic center, the most convenient drop-off location is Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto, or the airport on the day you leave the lagoon. The same applies to pick-up: we'll meet you there, collect your car, and you'll continue to your hotel by boat.
Marco Polo Airport is located on the mainland, overlooking the lagoon. We can deliver your car to you at arrivals if you're leaving immediately for the Veneto region, or pick it up there before your flight. To reach the historic center from the airport, you can take a water taxi, which will drop you off near your hotel, or the scheduled boat service.
Many travelers visit Venice without a car and have it delivered on the day of departure for the hills or mountains.
Between Venice and Padua, the Brenta River is lined with villas built by Venetian families as country residences. Villa Foscari, known as La Malcontenta, designed by Andrea Palladio, is located at the beginning of the route, near Venice. Further along, in Stra, Villa Pisani is striking for its size, extensive park, and hedge maze.
The Riviera tour is short and can easily be done in half a day, with stops in Mira, Dolo, and Stra. The villas have different opening hours: it's a good idea to check them before you set off.
Padua is about 40 minutes away: in addition to the Basilica of Saint Anthony, the Scrovegni Chapel, with Giotto's frescoes, is worth a visit (book in advance). Treviso, about half an hour away, is a quiet city crisscrossed by canals, with a historic center nestled within its walls.
Continuing west, in about an hour and a half you reach Verona , where the Arena hosts the opera season in the summer. Just beyond is Lake Garda , less than two hours from the lagoon.
North of Treviso, between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, the Prosecco hills are a UNESCO World Heritage Site: steep slopes covered in vineyards, small villages, and wineries open to visitors. It's about an hour's drive from Venice, and a signposted wine route connects the two towns through the hills.
The roads are narrow and winding but lightly trafficked, making them suitable for a convertible on sunny days. If you're planning on tastings, decide in advance who will drive and who will forgo the tastings.
From the lagoon, the highway climbs toward Belluno and the Dolomites: Cortina d'Ampezzo is about two and a half hours away. It's an easy way to combine city and mountains in the same trip, for high-altitude hikes in summer and skiing in winter. During the colder months, our cars always have winter tires.
For the Brenta Riviera and the Prosecco hills, the most pleasant choice is a discovery, for example a Ferrari Roma Spider or a Porsche 911 (992) 4S Cabriolet. If after Venice you head up to the mountains or are traveling with a lot of luggage, an SUV is more suitable : Range Rover, Mercedes-AMG G63, or 7-seater Defender 110. For groups, we recommend the Mercedes-Benz V-Class: space for a group or a family with a lot of luggage.
Carnival, which usually falls in February, and the Biennale, the major international art and architecture exhibition, bring visitors from around the world to Venice, as does the Venice Film Festival on the Lido between late August and early September. During these periods, hotels and parking lots fill up: plan your car drop-off and pick-up in advance.
Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant seasons to combine the city with the villas and hills. In summer, it's hot and the lagoon is very crowded, while in winter, Venice is quieter.
